#bertone

Bertone was one of Italy’s most influential coachbuilders and automotive design houses. Founded in Turin in 1912 by Giovanni Bertone, the company initially specialised in the construction and repair of carriage and automobile bodies before becoming closely associated with the development of Italian industrial design. Its international reputation grew particularly under Giovanni’s son, Giuseppe “Nuccio” Bertone, who transformed the family business into a major centre for styling, engineering and limited-series production. Bertone collaborated with numerous manufacturers, including Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Lancia, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, BMW and Volvo, creating both experimental prototypes and production models. The company became known for bold proportions, aerodynamic research and highly sculptural forms. Important designers who worked at Bertone included Franco Scaglione, Giorgetto Giugiaro and Marcello Gandini, each of whom contributed to some of the most recognisable cars of the post-war period. Among Bertone’s best-known creations were the Alfa Romeo BAT studies, Giulietta Sprint and Montreal, the Lamborghini Miura, Espada and Countach, the Fiat X1/9 and the Lancia Stratos. Bertone also produced small-series bodies for independent manufacturers and importers. Its collaboration with Stanley H. “Wacky” Arnolt resulted in the Bertone-bodied Arnolt-MG, Arnolt-Aston Martin, Arnolt-Bentley and Arnolt-Bristol, combining British mechanical components, Italian coachwork and American commercial distribution.
