#AlfaRomeoPortello

The Alfa Romeo del Portello plant was the company’s first dedicated production site, located in the Portello district of Milan. Originally built in 1906 by Darracq to assemble French-designed vehicles, the facility was taken over in 1910 by the newly founded A.L.F.A. (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili), marking the beginning of Alfa Romeo’s industrial journey. Over the decades, the Portello plant became the beating heart of Alfa Romeo’s operations, housing design offices, engineering departments, and assembly lines. It was here that many of the marque’s most iconic models were conceived and built, including the 6C and 8C series, the postwar 1900 and Giulietta, and numerous racing cars. The site also witnessed Alfa Romeo’s evolution from luxury carmaker to motorsport powerhouse and eventually into a mass-production manufacturer. In its later years, as production demands and logistics evolved, Alfa Romeo gradually shifted operations to more modern facilities such as Arese and Pomigliano d’Arco. The Portello plant officially ceased production in 1986, closing a historic chapter in Italian automotive history. Though most of the factory has since been demolished, the site remains a symbol of Milan’s industrial heritage and Alfa Romeo’s formative years.

We'll tell the story of this factory on the occasion of its anniversary or when it will reach a sufficient number of cars.
