Note: Entrant: George Moffett (USA). The OSCA was still painted white when Moffett took it out for Saturday afternoon practice. During his first test with the car, he spun off and crashed heavily, striking the concrete base of a landing light and overturning. Contemporary photographs show the severity of the impact: the left-hand side of the body around the driver’s compartment was crushed deeply inward and the car was extensively damaged. Moffett sustained fractures to an arm and a leg, as well as numerous cuts, and was unable to race. Bobby Said, who had already been entered as Moffett’s co-driver, was therefore able to take over the car. At about 7:30 that evening, Said and the OSCA crew examined the wreck and determined that, despite the extensive body damage, the car’s main structure was still sound. George F. Foelsing, Richard B. Kirkland, Melvin G. Fromm, Clarr W. Fochler, James C. Scott and Roy Pauley then worked throughout the night to rebuild the badly damaged OSCA, with assistance from personnel and volunteers at the Bergstrom Air Force Base machine shop. The bodywork required extensive reconstruction and the running gear was thoroughly inspected, including Magnaflux testing. By about 8:30 the following morning the repaired car had been hastily repainted bright red, marking a documented change from its pre-accident white finish, and christened the “B.A.F.B. Special” — “Bergstrom Air Force Base Special” — with the name painted on the bonnet. After passing technical inspection, it was ready to race. Said was subsequently awarded the sportsmanship trophy for the remarkable overnight recovery of the car and its return to competition. Average speed 119.5763 km/h.

Moffett retook the lead on lap 19 and remained in front to the finish, securing an OSCA one-two finish by 1m 37.4s at an average speed of 117.804 km/h (73.199 mph), with Wessells finishing about a lap and a half behind.

The Sports Car Club of America delegation selected for Buenos Aires comprised Masten Gregory (Jaguar C-Type), Carroll Shelby (Cadillac-Allard), Phil Hill (Ferrari) and Bob Said, who was to drive the Italian OSCA. The four drivers had been chosen by the Automobile Club Argentino from a field of 47 applicants, highlighting the prestige of the invitation. During the race, Said was forced to retire with gearbox trouble.
