Sergio Pininfarina, born Sergio Farina (Turin, 8 September 1926 – Turin, 3 July 2012), was an Italian engineer, entrepreneur, automotive designer and life senator. After graduating in mechanical engineering from the Polytechnic University of Turin in 1950, he joined the family company founded by his father, Battista “Pinin” Farina. He became general manager in 1960, managing director in 1961 and, following his father’s death in 1966, chairman of Pininfarina. Under his leadership, the company expanded its design, engineering and research activities, strengthening long-standing relationships with manufacturers such as Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Peugeot. In 1961, by decree of the President of the Italian Republic Giovanni Gronchi, the family surname Farina was officially changed to Pininfarina. In 2005, Sergio Pininfarina was appointed Senator for Life of the Italian Republic by President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
