#Porsche
Porsche was founded in Stuttgart in 1931 by Austrian engineer Ferdinand Porsche as Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche GmbH, initially operating as an independent engineering and design consultancy rather than as a car manufacturer. Among its most important early projects were the Volkswagen, developed under Ferdinand Porsche’s direction, and the Auto Union Grand Prix cars. After the Second World War, Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche led the creation of the company’s first sports car, the Porsche 356, whose first prototype was completed at Gmünd, Austria, in 1948. The 356 established Porsche as a sports-car manufacturer and was followed in 1963 by the Porsche 901, renamed 911 before series production. The rear-engined 911 became the company’s defining model and developed through numerous road and competition versions, including the Carrera RS, RSR and Turbo. Porsche also produced front-engined models such as the 924, 928, 944 and 968, and later expanded its range with the mid-engined Boxster and other model families. Motorsport has been fundamental to Porsche from the company’s earliest years, with its cars achieving major successes in endurance racing, rallying and other disciplines, including a record-setting history at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
