The Tour de France Automobile was a French long-distance motor racing event whose origins date back to 1899. It was re-established in 1951 by the Automobile Club de Nice in the format for which it became best known, combining road sections with circuit races, hill climbs and other timed tests. Its route changed from year to year and often included major French circuits such as Le Mans, Reims, Rouen, Montlhéry, Charade and Pau, as well as mountain stages including Mont Ventoux. The event was initially centred on Touring and Grand Touring cars, although later regulations also admitted more specialised competition machinery, including sports prototypes. After an interruption between 1965 and 1968, the Tour returned in 1969 and continued, with changing formats, until 1986. In 1992 it was revived as the Tour Auto, a historic competition for cars associated with the original event.
