Jaguar is a British automobile manufacturer whose origins date to 1922, when William Lyons and William Walmsley founded the Swallow Sidecar Company, initially producing motorcycle sidecars before expanding into coachbuilt bodies for passenger cars. The business later became S.S. Cars Ltd., producing complete automobiles in association with the Standard Motor Company, with the Jaguar name first used for individual models during the 1930s. In 1945 the company changed its name from S.S. Cars Ltd. to Jaguar Cars Ltd. The marque became internationally known for a combination of sporting performance, distinctive styling and competitive success, particularly through models such as the XK120, C-Type, D-Type and E-Type. Jaguar also established a strong presence in endurance racing during the 1950s, including multiple victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 1960 Jaguar acquired Daimler, one of Britain’s oldest automotive marques. Over the following decades the company passed through several corporate structures and changes of ownership, while retaining a strong association with luxury and high-performance cars. Jaguar and Daimler models have also been supplied for official use by the British Royal Household.
