Sergio Camuffo (born April 19, 1940, in Villa Vicentina, Udine) was an Italian automotive engineer closely tied to Lancia, playing a key role in some of its most iconic models. His expertise helped shape Lancia’s identity during its integration into Fiat Group after 1969. In the early 1970s, Camuffo oversaw the Lancia Stratos production, coordinating engineers like Francesco De Virgilio, Francesco Faleo, and Nicola Materazzi. Designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone and powered by a Ferrari Dino V6, the Stratos became the first car purpose-built for rally racing, securing three consecutive World Rally Championships (1974–1976). He also played a crucial role in the Lancia 037, the last rear-wheel-drive WRC champion (1983). Working alongside Cesare Fiorio and Giorgio Pianta, he contributed to its lightweight Kevlar and fiberglass construction, ensuring its competitiveness against emerging four-wheel-drive rivals. Beyond motorsport, Camuffo was instrumental in developing the Lancia Delta, launched in 1979 and awarded European Car of the Year (1980). It later evolved into the legendary Delta Integrale, dominating rallying in the late 1980s and early 1990s. His contributions defined an era of innovation and racing success, cementing Lancia’s legacy in both road and rally performance.
