In the automotive field, S. H. Arnolt Inc., based in Chicago, Illinois, and Warsaw, Indiana, marketed cars combining British mechanical components with bodies designed and built by Carrozzeria Bertone between 1953 and 1968. Stanley H. “Wacky” Arnolt was a Chicago industrialist who began importing European automobiles into the United States during the early 1950s. Although marketed under an American name, the resulting cars were genuine international hybrids, combining British chassis and engines, Italian coachwork, and American sales and distribution. In some cases, final assembly, preparation and additional bodywork were also carried out in the United States. S. H. Arnolt Inc. was officially licensed as an automobile manufacturer in the State of Illinois. A chance meeting between Arnolt and Nuccio Bertone at the 1952 Turin Motor Show led to four principal collaborations between the two companies, using chassis, running gear and engines supplied by the British manufacturers MG, Aston Martin, Bentley and Bristol.
