The Royal Automobile Club (RAC) is one of Britain’s oldest and most influential motoring organisations. Founded in 1897 as the Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland, it received the Royal title in 1907. The Club played a central role in the development of British motoring, promoting touring, road safety and motor sport, and organising major competitions including the RAC Tourist Trophy, first held in 1905. For much of the twentieth century, the RAC also exercised governing authority over British motor sport, issuing competition licences and regulating national events, responsibilities later transferred to the RAC Motor Sports Association, now Motorsport UK. Based at its historic clubhouse in Pall Mall, London, the Royal Automobile Club remains an important institution in British motoring and motor-sport heritage. The modern RAC roadside-assistance business is a separate commercial organisation.
