#BolzanoMendola

The Bolzano–Mendola hill climb was a major event on both the Italian and European motorsport calendars, held along the SS42 road from Bolzano (or, in later years, from Appiano) to the Mendel Pass. First contested in 1930, the course originally stretched approximately 26 km, later shortened to 14.4 km after 1956. It featured a demanding ascent of nearly 1,000 m, reaching an elevation of about 1,360 m. The race counted for decades toward the Italian Hill Climb Championship and, in 1965, was included in the World Sportscar Championship. It was also part of the European Hill Climb Championship in 1975, 1977, 1979, and 1981. Over the course of 43 editions held between 1930 and 1988, the event attracted top-level drivers such as Eugenio Castellotti, Ludovico Scarfiotti, Jochen Rindt, Herbert Demetz, and Mauro Nesti, and featured entries from renowned manufacturers including Porsche, Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Abarth, Osella, Lola, and BMW. The race was discontinued following a fatal accident in 1981, and the final edition took place in 1988. Since 2007, the route has been revived for historic motorsport gatherings—sometimes under the name Trofeo Giovanni Agnelli—and is now part of both the Italian and FIA Historic Hill Climb Championships, preserving its legacy as a classic alpine hill climb.
