Yoshiyuki Hayashi is a Japanese entrepreneur, stylist, and denim designer who rose to international prominence both for his pioneering role in Japan’s fashion and lifestyle industries and for his extraordinary career as a collector of historically significant automobiles. Active since the 1980s, Hayashi was one of the first Japanese figures to bridge the worlds of high fashion and classic car collecting. He gained early recognition as a designer and trendsetter in the denim world, where he helped shape the resurgence of artisanal Japanese denim as a global reference point for quality and style. In parallel, he began acquiring some of the world’s most coveted cars, building a collection that would come to include multiple blue-chip Ferraris. His commitment to design extended beyond collecting: in 2006, he commissioned Zagato to rebody his Ferrari 575M in homage to the 250 GTZ of 1956, resulting in the Ferrari 575 GTZ—an all-aluminum coachbuilt one-off unveiled at Villa d’Este, with signature double-bubble roof and two-tone livery. Hayashi’s appreciation for aerodynamic form and historical design was also reflected in his longtime ownership of the full trio of Alfa Romeo B.A.T. concept cars—B.A.T. 5, 7, and 9—designed by Franco Scaglione and built by Bertone between 1953 and 1955. Keeping them together as a set for decades, he preserved what many consider one of the greatest artistic expressions of postwar automotive design.
We'll publish a biography on him on the occasion of his anniversary or when it will be reached a sufficient number of cars.
