#Opel
Founded by Adam Opel in Rüsselsheim in 1862, the company began with sewing machines, moved into bicycle production in the 1880s and entered the automotive field at the end of the nineteenth century. Opel started car production in 1899 and, during the following decades, grew into one of Germany’s leading manufacturers. In 1929 General Motors acquired a controlling interest in the company, giving Opel access to greater industrial resources while consolidating its position in the European market. After the Second World War, Opel resumed production and rebuilt its range around practical, modern passenger cars that achieved wide commercial success in Germany and abroad. By the 1960s the marque offered a broad line-up that included saloons, estates, coupés and sporting derivatives, supported by a reputation for solid engineering and large-scale production efficiency. Models such as the Kadett, Rekord, Kapitän, Admiral and Diplomat played an important role in defining Opel’s place in the post-war European car industry. Based in Rüsselsheim, the company remained for decades one of the central names in German automobile manufacturing.
