The Inter-Varsity Speed Trials were annual motoring competitions held at Syston Park near Grantham during the mid‑1930s, pitting Oxford against Cambridge in a relay of speed tests. Conducted over a measured half-mile course laid out along the main drive, the trials featured both cars and motorcycles and were distinguished by lively competition and academic rivalry. The event format included class-based speed runs, with standout performances such as R. E. Tongue recording 27.2 secs in his R‑type MG Midget in 1936, beating Oliver Bertram’s previous mark set in a Delage, and Oxford’s P. F. Jucker breaking the course record in 1937. These trials captured the spirit of amateur motorsport and student enthusiasm between 1935 and 1939.
