#GransdenLodgeRaces
The Gransden Lodge Races of 15 June 1946 marked a historic turning point in British motorsport, being the first post-war closed-circuit motor race held in the UK. Organized by the Cambridge University Automobile Club, the event took place at Gransden Lodge Aerodrome, a former RAF base in Cambridgeshire. A triangular circuit was laid out using sections of perimeter track and runways. Races were run across several categories, including a main event for 5000cc Sports Cars, drawing numerous pre-war machines and notable entrants, many of whom had been waiting years to return to racing. This race symbolized Britain’s motorsport revival and helped demonstrate the potential of repurposing airfields—an idea that soon led to the establishment of circuits like Silverstone and Goodwood. The Gransden Lodge meetings were held again in 1947 but were eventually discontinued in favor of larger national venues.
