George Monroe Moffett Jr. (1920–1978) was an American sportsman, racing driver, yachtsman, nature photographer and conservationist. Born into a prominent New York family, in 1948 he married British actress June Duprez, with whom he had two daughters. Moffett competed in sports-car racing during the early 1950s, initially with a Jaguar XK120 and subsequently with O.S.C.A. MT4s. He also entered his cars for other drivers, including Boris “Bob” Said and William “Bill” David. Outside motor racing, Moffett was particularly active in ocean sailing. He campaigned the yacht Guinevere in major offshore events and became closely associated with the sailing community of Martha’s Vineyard. A memorial race bearing his name was later established there. Moffett was also a keen ornithologist and wildlife photographer. In 1963 he acquired land at Felix Neck on Martha’s Vineyard to protect it from development. The property subsequently became the Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, now managed by the Massachusetts Audubon Society. His varied interests in competition, exploration and conservation made him a distinctive figure among the American gentleman drivers of the post-war period.
