Floyd Bennett Field, in Brooklyn, New York, opened in 1931 as the city’s first municipal airport and later became a U.S. Naval Air Station. Its extensive runways and taxiways also made it suitable for temporary motor-racing circuits during the post-war sports-car boom. In the early 1950s it hosted SCCA sports-car meetings, including the 1953 Floyd Bennett Sports Car Race. The venue’s wide airfield layout was typical of several American circuits of the period, where military and civilian airfields were adapted for road racing.
