The FIA World Sportscar Championship was the principal international motor racing championship for sports cars, Grand Touring cars and sports prototypes, organised under the authority of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) from 1953 to 1992. Established as a manufacturers' championship, its inaugural season included major endurance events such as the 12 Hours of Sebring, Mille Miglia, 24 Hours of Le Mans, Nürburgring 1000 Kilometres and Carrera Panamericana. Over the following decades, its regulations and official designations changed considerably, reflecting the evolution of sports car racing and the distinction between production-based GT cars and purpose-built prototypes. In 1963, the championship comprised the International Championship for GT Manufacturers and the International Trophy for GT Prototypes, with separate divisions based on engine capacity. During this period, the calendar extended beyond traditional endurance races to include shorter circuit events, hillclimbs and road competitions such as the Tour de France Automobile. The championship attracted leading manufacturers including Ferrari, Porsche, Ford, Alfa Romeo, Matra, Renault, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Lancia and Peugeot. From the early 1980s, Group C sports prototypes became central to the competition, which adopted the World Sports Prototype Championship designation in 1986. The original championship ended after the 1992 season. International sports car racing subsequently continued through various series before the establishment of the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2012, restoring a dedicated world championship for endurance racing.
