The Coupe des Alpes was an international road rally held from 1932 to 1971. First contested as the Rallye des Alpes Françaises, it became the Rallye International des Alpes after the Second World War and adopted an international route in 1948. From 1953 it formed part of the FIA European Rally Championship, becoming one of the world's most prestigious and demanding rally events. Although Marseille was traditionally associated with the start or finish of the event, the route and format varied over the years. Its route crossed many of the major Alpine passes in France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria and Germany, combining endurance, regularity and precise timekeeping over difficult mountain roads. The coveted Coupe des Alpes trophy was awarded to crews completing the rally without incurring penalties. During the 1950s and 1960s, the event attracted the leading manufacturers, works teams and private entrants from across Europe.
