#CoppaDelChiantiClassico
The Coppa del Chianti Classico is an Italian hillclimb competition held on the Strada Chiantigiana (SS 222), between Quercegrossa and Castellina in Chianti, near Siena, Tuscany. Its origins date to 1961, when the Automobile Club Siena organised the first Rallye Automobilistico del Chianti. From 1962, the route between Quercegrossa and Fonterutoli was used as a timed section, becoming the principal attraction of the event. In 1965, the competition was transformed into a dedicated hillclimb, with Spartaco Dini winning the inaugural edition in a Ford Cortina Lotus. The following year, the course was extended to 8.2 km, finishing at Croce Fiorentina, and Romano “Shangri-Là” Martini took overall victory. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, the event attracted leading Italian hillclimb competitors, including Edoardo Lualdi Gabardi, Franco Pilone and Arturo Merzario, driving sports cars, Grand Touring cars and racing prototypes. After a prolonged interruption, the Coppa del Chianti Classico was revived in 1993 as a competition primarily for historic racing cars. It subsequently became part of the Italian Historic Hill Climb Championship and, for several editions, the FIA Historic Hill Climb Championship. The event continues to use the traditional Chiantigiana road, with a course of approximately 8 km passing through Fonterutoli and San Leonino towards Croce Fiorentina.
