BMW (an acronym for Bayerische Motoren Werke, which translates into English as “Bavarian Motor Works”) is a German manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles headquartered in Munich, Bavaria. Officially established in 1917, the company initially focused on producing aircraft engines to support Germany’s wartime aviation industry. Following the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, which banned German companies from manufacturing aircraft engines, BMW was forced to diversify its industrial activities. It first turned to the production of industrial engines and railway brakes before entering the motorcycle market in the early 1920s. The company’s first motorcycle, the BMW R32, introduced in 1923, already demonstrated the brand’s commitment to technical innovation and engineering precision. In 1928, BMW entered the automobile sector by acquiring Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach, the manufacturer of Dixi cars, marking the beginning of its long-standing history as a carmaker. Starting with licensed versions of the Austin Seven, BMW rapidly developed its own designs throughout the 1930s, establishing a reputation for advanced engineering, elegant styling, and sporting performance. Landmark pre-war models such as the BMW 326, 327, and especially the legendary 328 roadster embodied the brand’s growing identity as a builder of refined, high-quality vehicles. Over the decades, BMW has continued to expand both technologically and globally, becoming one of the most respected and influential automotive manufacturers in the world. The brand is particularly recognized for the construction quality of its vehicles, the precision of its driving dynamics, and its long-standing focus on innovation across all aspects of design and engineering. Today, BMW operates as a major global group that includes MINI and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, while remaining deeply associated with German industrial excellence and its core values of performance, innovation, and driving pleasure.
