#BARCGoodwoodScratch&Handicap
In the early post-war years, the British Automobile Racing Club (BARC) regularly organized both scratch and handicap races at the newly opened Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex. Scratch races featured all cars starting together, while handicap races staggered start times based on performance, creating thrilling come-from-behind challenges. These events—often held on club days or during national meetings—welcomed a wide mix of sports cars, specials, and modified pre-war machines. Drivers such as R.R.C. Walker, Prince Bira, Tony Rolt and Sydney Allard took part in these fiercely contested formats. The BARC’s dual-race structure became a hallmark of British club racing culture and played a crucial role in reviving motorsport in Britain during the late 1940s and early 1950s.
