Especially with a view to the North American market, Aston Martin introduced a convertible version of the V8 in the summer of 1978, traditionally called the V8 Volante. The Volante was initially only available with the standard V8 engine as the powerful Vantage engine was not considered suitable for the open car for safety reasons.
