Antonio Pucci, known as the "Gattopardo Volante" and affectionately called "Zio Antonio," was a prominent Sicilian racing driver active during the 1950s and 1960s. Born on August 29, 1923, in Petralia Sottana, Sicily, he was deeply connected to the region's motorsport heritage. Pucci began his racing career in 1947, driving a Fiat 1100 Sport in the Catania–Etna hillclimb, where he secured a class third and fifth overall. His passion for racing led him to compete in various events, including the Targa Florio, where he participated in 14 editions. In 1964, he achieved a significant milestone by winning the 48th Targa Florio alongside British driver Colin Davis in a Porsche 904 GTS, marking the first victory for a Sicilian driver in the race's history. Beyond his racing accomplishments, Pucci served as an official test driver for Porsche, contributing to the development of their vehicles. His expertise and familiarity with the challenging Sicilian terrain made him an invaluable asset to the German manufacturer. After retiring from active competition in 1966, he continued to support motorsport as a National Sports Commissioner and advisor to the Automobile Club of Palermo until 1986. Antonio Pucci passed away on July 15, 2009, in Palermo at the age of 85. His legacy endures through commemorative events and publications, celebrating his contributions to Italian motorsport and his enduring connection to the Targa Florio.
