The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider was a two-seat open sports car produced from 1955 to 1962. Its development was strongly encouraged by Alfa Romeo’s U.S. importer Max Hoffman, who saw a market in North America for an open version of the Giulietta aimed at customers interested in compact European sports cars. In 1954 Rudolf Hruska asked Bertone and Pinin Farina to prepare competing proposals, assigning two chassis to each coachbuilder. Bertone developed a more overtly sporting interpretation, while Pinin Farina proposed a cleaner and more restrained design. Alfa Romeo selected the Pinin Farina proposal for production, creating a model that combined the Giulietta’s mechanical layout with a shortened wheelbase and a distinctive open body. The Giulietta Spider remained in production until 1962, when it evolved into the 1.6-litre Giulia Spider.
