#1000KmZeltweg

The 1000 km of Zeltweg was an endurance car race that took place near Zeltweg, Austria, and was part of the World Sports Prototype Championship since the second edition. Originally called Grosser Preiss von Österreich (Austrian Grand Prix), the inaugural edition of the race was held in 1965 over a distance of 200 miles on the temporary circuit created inside the Hinterstoisser-Zeltweg Aerodrome (which the previous year had hosted the homonymous Formula 1 race), to then see its distance extended to 500 km for the editions from 1966 to 1968, when it was included in the world championship. Starting from 1969 the event took on its most classic conformation, moving to the Österreichring and adapting its length to that of other races of the world sports prototypes, of which it was part until 1976, the last year in which there was a stage of the championship in Austrian territory. The race retained the title of Grosser Preiss von Österreich until that title was awarded to the Formula 1 race in 1970, being replaced by 1000-km-Rennen von Österreich, and then changed to 6 Hours of Zeltweg in 1976. In 1997, as part of the reborn FIA GT Championship, a new test was scheduled which can be considered the heir, although no longer disputed over the length of 1000 km, but over the distance of the four hours of racing in the first edition and over 500 km in the following ones. The race was held on the renewed A1-Ring circuit and the last edition dates back to 2001.
