Filippo Surace was an Italian engineer and one of Alfa Romeo’s leading post-war research and development figures. By 1956 he was working at Alfa Romeo as an experimental engineer, specialising in the development of new-concept petrol engines. In 1958 he became assistant to Giampaolo Garcea at the new research centre established under Orazio Satta Puliga, where he was responsible for theoretical research and helped introduce computer-based methods to the company. In 1967 Surace became responsible for Alfa Romeo’s theoretical and experimental research activities. In 1976, following Satta Puliga’s death, he was appointed technical director general for research and development, a position he held for nine years. During this period he played an important role in the development of later Alfa Romeo models and powertrains, including the Alfa 33, diesel programmes, 90 and 75.
