FROM KNOWN EARLY EXAMPLE TO DOCUMENTED MILLE MIGLIA FINISHER
May 12, 2026
STARTING POINT
The car was already known as one of the earliest examples of Fiat’s first post-war sports car: the sixth car of the model, belonging to the initial pre-series of 12 units specially prepared for competition use. The car had also been known for its later ownership history, restoration and participation in historic events. However, despite being a significant and early example of the model, it apparently had no documented period racing history.
RESEARCH
It took many years of research to identify the period competition events connected to chassis no. 1100S*500006*. The decisive element was the reconstruction of the car’s registration history through its plate number, made possible by the collaboration with Archivio Targhe. This same research method had already proved successful in the case of the 1943 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS, chassis no. 915527, where the connection between registration data and archival evidence had allowed a previously unclear history to be reconstructed. In the case of the Fiat 1100 S, the identification of the Mille Miglia entry was achieved through a process of exclusion, comparing the car with the other early examples of the model and matching chassis number, ownership records and registration number. This made it possible to identify chassis no. 1100S*500006* as the car entered in the XIV Mille Miglia – Coppa Franco Mazzotti, held on 21–22 June 1947, with race number 156, driven by Alberto Comirato and co-driven by his wife Amalia “Lia” Dumas Comirato. The car competed in the Sport category, up to 1100 cc class, and finished 8th overall and 6th in class. The research also clarified its subsequent competition use, including Alberto Comirato’s ownership in 1948 and his participation in the Raduno Automobilistico Triestino – Chilometro lanciato, where he finished 2nd in class. The result is a significant historical upgrade: a car once known mainly as an important early Fiat 1100 S is now documented as a Mille Miglia finisher with period competition history, its identity established through a careful cross-check of registration evidence, chassis data and comparative research on the surviving early cars.
