The origins of the Gran Premio di Roma date back to 1925: car races were disputed near the Roma airport, with the name of "Gran Premio Reale di Roma" until 1932.

Later, other motor races were organized in Ostia on the "Circuito dell'Impero" where, on June 11th 1939, Enzo Ferrari Sporting Director of the Team bearing his name, with Alfa Romeo cars, won the first Trofeo dell'Impero thanks to Carlo Pintacuda who won in the most important class. After the war, the automobile races in Rome resumed in 1947, on a city circuit near the Terme di Caracalla.
