Subaru is a Japanese automobile manufacturer and brand, historically part of Fuji Heavy Industries, which was renamed Subaru Corporation in 2017. Its industrial roots go back to Nakajima Aircraft, one of Japan’s major aircraft manufacturers before and during the Second World War. After the post-war reorganisation of Japanese industry, Fuji Heavy Industries was established in 1953, bringing together several companies active in scooters, engines, chassis, coachbuilding and trading. The name Subaru, chosen for the company’s first car project, refers to the Japanese name of the Pleiades star cluster, represented by the six-star emblem. The marque became known for distinctive engineering choices such as horizontally opposed “boxer” engines, all-wheel drive and compact, technically robust cars. In motorsport, Subaru achieved international prominence especially in rallying, where its partnership with Prodrive and the Subaru World Rally Team made the Impreza one of the defining cars of the World Rally Championship era.
