Subaru Impreza WRC was the World Rally Car developed for the Subaru World Rally Team by Prodrive following the introduction of the World Rally Car regulations in the FIA World Rally Championship. Introduced in 1997 as the successor to the Group A-based Impreza 555, it retained the Impreza’s basic identity — compact dimensions, turbocharged flat-four engine and four-wheel drive — while benefiting from the greater technical freedom allowed by the new regulations. First built in two-door form on the GC8-generation Impreza, and later evolved into further two-door and four-door versions, the Impreza WRC became one of the defining rally cars of its era. It was closely associated with drivers such as Colin McRae, Richard Burns and Petter Solberg, and contributed to Subaru’s major successes in the World Rally Championship, including manufacturers’ and drivers’ titles. Produced in successive evolutions from 1997 to 2008, the Impreza WRC remains one of the most recognisable and significant World Rally Cars of the modern rally era.
