Subaru Impreza is a compact car produced by Subaru from 1992 and introduced as the successor to the Leone. Offered in several body styles and generations, it became one of the marque’s most important models, combining relatively compact dimensions with Subaru’s distinctive technical identity, including horizontally opposed engines and all-wheel drive. The first-generation Impreza, known by the GC/GF/GM platform codes, provided the basis for Subaru’s major international rally programme in the 1990s and early 2000s. In competition form, first as the Group A Impreza 555 and later as the Impreza WRC, it became one of the defining cars of the World Rally Championship, closely associated with Prodrive, the Subaru World Rally Team and drivers such as Colin McRae, Richard Burns and Petter Solberg. Through this rally success, the Impreza acquired a strong sporting image and became one of the most recognisable Japanese performance cars of its era.
