Subaru AWD refers to Subaru’s long-established use of all-wheel drive as a central element of its engineering identity. Subaru introduced four-wheel drive passenger cars in the early 1970s and progressively developed the concept into one of the marque’s defining technical features. Combined with the horizontally opposed boxer engine, Subaru’s all-wheel-drive layout helped give many of its cars a low centre of gravity, balanced packaging and strong traction in difficult conditions. The system became especially important to Subaru’s image in rallying, where permanent four-wheel drive was a key factor in the competitiveness of the Legacy and later the Impreza. In both road and competition cars, Subaru AWD became associated with stability, durability and performance on low-grip surfaces.
