Stefano Iacoponi is an Italian engineer born in 1941 in Cascina, Pisa. After graduating in mechanical engineering from the University of Pisa in 1965, he worked at Ferrari (1965-1969) on the 212 E and a 2.0L 12-cylinder boxer engine. At Abarth (1969-1974), he led engine development, working on Fiat Abarth fuel-injected and 16-valve engines for the 124 Abarth Rally and 131 Rally, which later became the foundation for rally cars such as the Lancia Rally 037, Delta S4, and Delta Integrale. Integrated into Fiat Auto (1974-1988), he oversaw engine, transmission, and chassis projects, including the FIRE engine and turbocharged units. He later held leadership roles at Alfa Romeo and Fiat, focusing on innovation and platform-based engineering.
