#SmokeyDrolet

Sierra “Smokey” Drolet was an American endurance and sports-car driver active from 1957 to the mid-1970s, remembered as one of the few female competitors regularly participating in major U.S. road-racing events of the period. Beginning her career in SCCA Regional races in Florida, she drove a wide range of cars — from Triumph TR2/TR3 and Formula Junior machines to American and European sports cars — often with the support of J. Frank Harrison. In 1959 she made her first appearance at the Sebring 12 Hours, and throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s she competed in SCCA events, hillclimbs, and the Nassau Speed Week, where she twice won the Ladies’ Race (1960 and 1962). From 1966 she returned to major endurance racing, joining all-female teams at the Daytona 24 Hours and Sebring 12 Hours, driving for Autosport and the Ring Free Motor Maids alongside figures such as Janet Guthrie, Rosemary Smith, and Anita Taylor. Her most notable results include a class win at Daytona in 1969 in a Corvette, and a second in class at Sebring the same year in a BMW 2002. Known for consistency, stamina, and a straightforward attitude, she often brought underpowered or ageing cars to the finish in long-distance races. After retiring from competition, she remained active in the automotive service and parts business. She passed away in June 2015.

We'll publish a biography on her on the occasion of her anniversary or when it will be reached a sufficient number of cars.
