Shinroku Momose was a Japanese aircraft and automotive engineer, and one of the key technical figures in the early history of Subaru. Trained in aeronautical engineering at Tokyo Imperial University, he joined Nakajima Aircraft during the Second World War and later became one of Fuji Heavy Industries’ leading engineers after the reorganisation of Japan’s aircraft industry. Momose worked on the Subaru 1500 project and is especially associated with the development of the Subaru 360, Subaru’s first mass-produced car, as well as the Subaru Sambar and Subaru 1000. His work helped define Subaru’s early engineering identity, including lightweight construction, compact packaging and, with the Subaru 1000, the front-mounted horizontally opposed engine layout that became central to the marque. He was later inducted into the Japan Automotive Hall of Fame.
