Paul Richard “Richie” Ginther (Hollywood, August 5, 1930 – Touzac-Le Roucou, September 20, 1989) was an American racing driver best known for his role in Formula One during the 1960s. A childhood friend of Phil Hill, he began his career in California sports car racing, driving Ferraris and Porsches in SCCA events before moving to Europe. Ginther made his Formula One debut with Ferrari in 1960, later racing for BRM and Honda. He contested 54 World Championship Grands Prix between 1959 and 1967, achieving 14 podium finishes and scoring 107 championship points. His greatest triumph came at the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix, where he delivered Honda’s first-ever Formula One victory—also his own only win in the category. Renowned for his technical insight and development skills, Ginther was instrumental in refining the performance of the cars he drove, and he also competed in major endurance races such as Le Mans, Sebring, and the Targa Florio. His career made him one of the key figures in the golden era of American drivers in international motorsport.
