Richard Burns was a British rally driver and one of the leading figures of the World Rally Championship at the turn of the 21st century. After early success in British rallying, he became a works driver for Subaru, Mitsubishi and later Peugeot, building a reputation for precision, consistency and exceptional speed on both gravel and asphalt. Burns won several major WRC events, including the Safari Rally, Rally Argentina, Rally New Zealand and the Rally of Great Britain, and became FIA World Rally Champion in 2001 with Subaru, the first English driver to win the title. Closely associated with the Subaru Impreza WRC and co-driver Robert Reid, he remains one of the most respected British rally drivers of the modern era. His career was cut short by illness, and he died in 2005 at the age of 34.
