The Rally Piancavallo is a historic Italian motorsport event held in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, known for its demanding mountain roads and unpredictable weather conditions. First run in 1980, the rally quickly grew in importance, becoming a key event in the Italian rally scene. Its most prestigious period came between 1993 and 2001, when it was included in the European Rally Championship (ERC). During these years, it attracted top international and Italian drivers, further cementing its reputation as a challenging and technical rally. The event became known for its fast but treacherous asphalt stages, with steep climbs and tight descents that tested even the most skilled competitors. Among the notable drivers who have competed at Rally Piancavallo are Andrea Aghini and Paolo Andreucci, both multiple-time Italian rally champions. The event also played a role in the careers of several young talents who later made their mark on the international stage. After its removal from the ERC, the rally continued as an important national event, maintaining its status within the Italian Rally Championship (CIR) and later in other national series. While it no longer holds the same international prominence as in its peak years, Rally Piancavallo remains a respected and technically demanding event within Italian motorsport.
