The Rali Vinho da Madeira, also known as the Madeira Rally, is a prestigious asphalt rally competition held annually in the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira. The first edition took place in 1959, and since 1979, the event has been part of the European Rally Championship (ERC), solidifying its importance in the international rally scene. Between 2006 and 2010, the rally was included in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) calendar, further increasing its visibility and attractiveness for world-class drivers. The rally route is renowned for its narrow and winding roads, featuring challenging sections such as Chão da Lagoa, Paul da Serra, and the Encumeada descent, which test the skill and precision of the drivers. Several drivers have made history at the Rali Vinho da Madeira. Portuguese driver Américo Nunes secured four victories between the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the 1990s, Italian driver Andrea Aghini matched this record with four wins, followed by his compatriot Giandomenico Basso, who also achieved four victories, the last one in 2013. The Rali Vinho da Madeira remains one of the most significant sporting events on the island, attracting thousands of spectators each year and contributing to the promotion of tourism in the region.
