Peter Frederic Baumberger (1925–2009) was a Swiss racing driver and collector of vintage cars. Born in London in 1925, he was the heir to a brewing dynasty that had been active for two centuries. He studied law in Basel, Switzerland, before moving to the United States. His career included prominent roles in the music industry, notably as CEO and Vice President of RCA Overseas. During that time, he had the opportunity to meet celebrities such as Elvis Presley. Baumberger began his motorsport career in 1955 with a Porsche 1600 and became East Coast SCCA 2-liter class champion in 1957. He later raced a Jaguar XK120 and, in 1958, partnered with Colin Chapman to form Team Lotus USA, purchasing six Lotus cars. He participated in major events such as the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1959, where he raced a Lancia Appia Zagato alongside Walter Cronkite and Warren Rohlfs. In 1966, Baumberger bought three brand-new Ferrari 275 GTB/4s for himself and his two stepsons, forming the "Three Bears" team, which competed in 1967. He was also one of the founders of the Swiss Ferrari Club in 1972. Beyond his racing career, Baumberger was a passionate vintage car collector. His collection included iconic models such as a 1962 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster, a 1973 Porsche 911 RS 2.7 Carrera, and a 2009 Ferrari California. After his passing in 2009, his collection of 19 cars was auctioned by Bonhams in 2010 at the Gstaad Palace Hotel in Switzerland. Peter F. Baumberger is remembered as a gentleman driver and a collector of great passion. His dedication to the world of vintage automobiles and his contribution to motorsport continue to be celebrated by enthusiasts and collectors around the world.
