Ovidio Capelli (March 12, 1901 – March 31, 1962) was a prominent figure in 20th-century Italian motorsport, recognized both as a successful racing driver and an influential Fiat dealer based in Milan. His motorsport career began in the 1930s and extended over three decades. In 1937, he clinched the Italian championship title in the 1500cc category. Known for his loyalty to the Fiat brand, Capelli consistently raced with finely prepared Fiat cars. During the 1950s, he achieved notable successes in several competitions. In 1953, he won the Stella Alpina Rally driving a Fiat 8V, ahead of respected drivers such as Fausto Rodenghi and Jean Herteaux. Two years later, in 1955, he partnered with Elio Zagato to win their class at the Targa Florio, finishing 11th overall in a Fiat 8V Zagato. Capelli was also a forward-thinking entrepreneur. As a Fiat dealer, he played a key role in a collective order of 200 units of the Fiat 1400 Berlinetta by Carrozzeria Touring, three of which were specially lightened for racing. One of these, driven by Capelli himself, competed in the Giro di Sicilia. In 1952, he commissioned a special body for his Fiat 8V (chassis no. 000002) from Zagato, leading to a small production of 8V Zagato models celebrated for their performance and lightweight construction. In addition, Capelli was involved in the management of Scuderia Ambrosiana, collaborating with Count Giovanni Lurani to promote Italian motorsport. His dual legacy as a passionate driver and visionary businessman has left a lasting impact on Italy’s automotive and racing culture.
