Kenji Kita was the first president of Fuji Heavy Industries, the industrial group that later became Subaru Corporation. A strong supporter of the company’s entry into automobile manufacturing, he promoted the development of Fuji Heavy Industries’ first passenger car, the P-1 prototype, later named Subaru 1500. Kita personally chose the name “Subaru”, the Japanese name for the Pleiades star cluster, which also inspired the marque’s six-star emblem. For this reason, he is an important figure in the origins of Subaru as an automobile brand, although he should be regarded as a corporate and strategic founder rather than as a designer or engineer of a specific model.
