#JoConnGuild

Josephus “Jo” Conn Guild Jr. (1887–1960) was a prominent Tennessee industrialist and civic leader, best known for his central role in the Tennessee Electric Power Company (TEPCO), one of the South’s major pre-war utility providers. As TEPCO’s president during the turbulent 1930s, Guild became a key figure in the nationally significant legal battle against the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), opposing the federal takeover of private electric utilities. The landmark case TEPCO v. TVA remains an important chapter in American industrial and legal history, illustrating the transition from private to public energy management in the region. Beyond the power industry, Guild was active in Chattanooga’s business and cultural life, served on major corporate boards, and helped guide regional economic development. Long regarded as a pillar of Tennessee’s civic and industrial establishment, he belonged to the influential Guild family, noted for its contributions to manufacturing, philanthropy, and community leadership.
