Hugh Rose (Dec 09, 1885, Southampton - Jan 04, 1965, Bilston, Staffordshire) was a former Riley employee where designed the1½-liter four-cylinder engine. He acquired the Lea-Francis company in 1931. Under his leadership, they produced motorcycles and cars until ceasing operations in this sector in 1963. Rose had a long-standing involvement in motorsport, contributing to the design of engines and cylinder heads for various sports cars. His son, Ken, followed in his footsteps, not only racing and building cars but also designing engines and managing an automotive accessory business. Known officially as Raymond Hugh Rose, he remained technical director at Cosmic Car Accessories until his passing. Earlier in his career, he worked as a draughtsman for Sunbeam and later transitioned into car design for the company. Rose stayed with Lea-Francis until 1959 and previously held roles as chief designer at Belsize Motors, Crossley Motors, and Calthorpe Motors. He later joined Bean Cars as a technical advisor.
