During the 1950s, the Grand Prix de Luxembourg was a notable automobile race held at the Findel circuit, near Luxembourg City. This temporary street circuit was active from 1939 to 1953 and hosted both car and motorcycle races. The 1950 edition took place on May 18 and featured 12 competitors. Scuderia Ferrari dominated the event, with Alberto Ascari securing victory in a Ferrari 166MM after completing 55 laps (207 km total) at an average speed of 122.517 km/h. His teammate Luigi Villoresi finished second, while Belgian driver Jacques Swaters took third place in a Veritas RS. The Findel circuit was a triangular track of approximately 3.766 km, running along the current N1A, N1C, and N1 roads, adjacent to Luxembourg-Findel Airport. The races were run in a clockwise direction, featuring a mix of straights and challenging curves that tested both the drivers' skills and the cars' performance. Apart from the 1950 race, the Grand Prix de Luxembourg was also held in 1949, 1951, and 1952. In 1949, Luigi Villoresi won in a Ferrari 166MM, while the 1951 and 1952 editions were restricted to Formula 3 cars. Eric Brandon won in 1951 and Ken Wharton in 1952, both driving Cooper cars. The 1952 Formula 3 race saw a tragic accident when British driver Alf Bottoms lost his life due to a throttle jam in a tight corner. The growing importance of Luxembourg-Findel Airport made it increasingly difficult to organize races on the surrounding public roads. Consequently, after 1952, the Findel circuit ceased hosting automobile competitions, marking the end of the Grand Prix de Luxembourg at that venue. The event remains an important chapter in European motorsport history, showcasing the significance of post-war road racing and the transition toward dedicated racing circuits.
