The Findel circuit was a temporary racing track located in Findel, in the municipality of Sandweiler, Luxembourg. Active from the late 1930s to the early 1950s, the circuit hosted several motor racing events, including the prestigious Grand Prix de Luxembourg. The triangular-shaped track measured approximately 3.766 km and ran along the current N1A (Rue de Trèves), N1C (Rue de Neudorf), and N1 roads, adjacent to Luxembourg-Findel Airport. The races were held in a clockwise direction, featuring a combination of straights and challenging corners that tested the drivers' skills and the performance of the vehicles. The first major competition on the Findel circuit was the Grand Prix du Centenaire in 1939, a sports car race won by Jean-Pierre Wimille in a Bugatti T57 S45. After the interruption caused by World War II, the circuit resumed activities, hosting the Grand Prix de Luxembourg from 1949 to 1952. The 1949 and 1950 editions featured sports cars, with Luigi Villoresi and Alberto Ascari securing victories in Ferrari 166MMs. In 1951 and 1952, the event transitioned to Formula 3, with Eric Brandon and Ken Wharton, both driving Cooper cars, claiming victories. A tragic event marked the 1952 edition, when British driver Alf Bottoms lost his life in an accident during the Formula 3 race. This incident, along with the growing importance of Luxembourg-Findel Airport and the increasing need for road access to the airport, led to the cessation of racing activities on the circuit after 1952. Today, the roads that once formed the Findel circuit still exist and are part of the local road network, primarily serving traffic to and from the airport. Despite its short-lived history, the Findel circuit remains a significant chapter in European post-war motorsport history.
