#Fiat1600S

The Fiat 1600 S was a high-performance evolution of the Fiat 1200/1500 Cabriolet line, produced between 1962 and 1966. It was a significant step forward in terms of both mechanical refinement and sporting image, thanks to the adoption of an advanced twin-cam engine developed by O.S.C.A. (Officine Specializzate Costruzioni Automobili Maserati), the company founded by the Maserati brothers after their departure from the original Maserati firm. The 1600 S retained the elegant cabriolet body designed and built by Pininfarina, with subtle exterior updates over the earlier Fiat 1500 S. These included minor grille changes and the adoption of dual headlamps (from late 1963), which became a visual signature of the later models. A handful of unique coupes and spiders were also built by Italian coachbuilders such as Fissore and Maina, based on the 1600 S chassis and mechanicals. The heart of the Fiat 1600 S was the OSCA 1568 cc inline-four twin-cam engine, type 118B.000, producing approximately 90–100 SAE horsepower, capable of propelling the car to a top speed of around 175 km/h (109 mph). It was paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox (optionally with overdrive), a live rear axle, and front disc brakes (introduced in the later series). The car was equipped with a platform-type steel chassis, often referred to as "118 SB", derived from the Fiat 1200 Cabriolet. Production of the 1600 S was limited, with around 3,089 units built, including the rare special-bodied variants. It remains a symbol of Fiat’s brief but notable collaboration with OSCA, combining elegant Italian styling with competition-bred engine technology. This model is also historically significant for being among the last Fiat sports cars to carry a Maserati-developed powertrain.
