Ernst Henne was one of Germany’s most celebrated motorcycle racers and a key figure in BMW’s early motorsport legacy. A factory rider for BMW during the 1920s and 1930s, he set numerous world speed records on two wheels and helped elevate the brand’s reputation for engineering excellence and performance. Beyond his motorcycle achievements, Henne also played a central role in the early public debut of the BMW 328. At the 1936 Eifelrennen at the Nürburgring, he drove the new model to victory in its class, effectively launching its sporting career. Though not an engineer himself, Henne’s close involvement in testing and development made him an influential figure in BMW’s vehicle refinement process. His feedback was highly valued by designers and technicians, including Fritz Fiedler and Rudolf Schleicher. Ernst Henne’s name remains strongly associated with BMW’s identity as a performance-oriented manufacturer, both for motorcycles and cars.
