#EnteTeatraleItaliano

The Ente Teatrale Italiano (ETI) was a national public institution established in 1942 (Law no. 163, March 18, 1942) with the aim of promoting and supporting theatrical activity throughout Italy. It remained active until 2010, when it was dissolved as part of a broader administrative reform. The ETI played a fundamental role in the development and dissemination of dramatic arts in Italy, especially in the post-war period and the cultural boom of the 1950s through the 1970s. Its mission encompassed the promotion of prose theatre both nationally and internationally, the organization of theatre seasons, festivals and tours, the direct or indirect management of important public theatres, and the financial support of theatre companies and productions considered artistically significant. It was also responsible for fostering contemporary Italian playwriting and preserving classical theatrical heritage, as well as cultivating new audiences and encouraging cultural education. Based in Rome, in Via dei Barbieri, the ETI coordinated its national and international operations from its headquarters and maintained close relationships with international institutions to promote Italian theatrical culture abroad. Among the theatres it managed or collaborated with were the Teatro Valle and Teatro Quirino in Rome, the Teatro della Pergola in Florence, and the ancient Greek Theatre of Syracuse, where it supported classical performances in partnership with the Istituto Nazionale del Dramma Antico (INDA). Following its closure under Decree-Law no. 112/2008, its functions were redistributed among various entities, including the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities (now the Ministry of Culture), the Teatro di Roma, the Teatro della Toscana, and the INDA. The ETI’s legacy remains significant in the history of Italian theatre for its role in ensuring access to cultural life across all regions of the country and in supporting the artistic and educational missions of Italian dramaturgy.
